What Is Your Tax-Free Retirement Score — And Why It Changes Everything

The Retirement Question Nobody Asks

When people plan for retirement, they focus on a single number: "How much do I need to retire?"

But there's a more important question hiding beneath that one: How much of your retirement income will actually be yours to keep?

If your retirement is built entirely on traditional IRAs, 401(k)s, and Social Security, a significant portion of every dollar you withdraw will be paid in taxes. And for many retirees, that tax burden grows over time as RMDs kick in and income stacks up.

Your Tax-Free Retirement Score tells you exactly how exposed you are — and what you can do about it.

What the Tax-Free Retirement Score Measures

The Tax-Free Retirement Score is a proprietary assessment developed to evaluate five key dimensions of your retirement tax exposure:

1. Account Type Distribution

What percentage of your savings is in taxable accounts (traditional IRA/401k), tax-free accounts (Roth), and taxable brokerage accounts? The higher the Roth percentage, the better your score.

2. RMD Exposure

Required Minimum Distributions from traditional IRAs and 401(k)s are fully taxable. The larger your traditional IRA balance relative to your other assets, the higher your forced future tax liability.

3. IRMAA Risk

Will your retirement income — including RMDs — push you into Medicare surcharge territory? Many retirees are surprised to find they're paying $3,000–$8,000/year in extra Medicare premiums that could have been avoided.

4. Social Security Tax Exposure

Up to 85% of your Social Security benefit can be taxed — but only if your income exceeds certain thresholds. We calculate how much of your Social Security is at risk based on your projected income mix.

5. Estate Tax Efficiency

How are your assets positioned to pass to the next generation? Traditional IRA assets passed to heirs can create immediate tax events under the SECURE Act. Roth assets pass tax-free.

Understanding Your Score

Score 80–100 (Tax-Free Champion): You're in excellent shape. Your income sources are diversified with strong tax-free components. Focus on maintenance and optimization.

Score 60–79 (On Track): You have a solid foundation but meaningful opportunities to reduce future tax exposure. Targeted Roth conversions and planning could save you tens of thousands.

Score 40–59 (At Risk): You have significant tax exposure that will grow over time. This is the most common score range and the most important stage to act — there's still time to make major improvements.

Score Below 40 (Tax Time Bomb): Your current path leads to forced, heavy taxation in retirement. Urgent planning is needed, but the good news is that early action can transform the outcome.

How to Improve Your Score

The most powerful lever is Roth conversion — systematically moving traditional IRA money into a Roth IRA during lower-income years before RMDs begin. Other strategies include:

  • Roth 401(k) contributions going forward
  • Social Security delay to reduce income in early retirement years (creating more room for Roth conversions)
  • Tax-loss harvesting in brokerage accounts
  • Charitable strategies like Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) to satisfy RMDs tax-free
  • Life insurance as a tax-free income source

The Difference Between Planning Early and Planning Late

Consider two retirees with identical $1 million traditional IRAs at age 60. One does nothing. One works with Smart Life Financial to systematically convert to Roth over 10 years.

By age 80, the difference in after-tax wealth can exceed $300,000 — from the same starting point. The time value of proactive tax planning is enormous.
